So you’re ready to get started with cycling - congratulations! Cycling, or spin as it is also commonly called, is an extremely rewarding fitness class that will have you pushing your limits and reaping all the rewards.
Not only are there major calorie-burning benefits to be gained from cycling but also a full-body workout to boot. That being said, spin class can be a little intimidating when you’re just getting started. Are you nervous about your first spin class?
Not to worry though, we’ve got you covered with the best tips to make the most of your first (or first few) cycling classes!
How to get better at spin class
Cycling class is a truly one of a kind fitness experience and there’s a reason it’s becoming more and more popular by the day.
You can not only expect a sweat-inducing, calorie-burning, full-body workout but a major boost to your metabolism for the remainder of your day!
Spin class can be intimidating for beginners, but if you follow these tips you’ll be headed to your first class with confidence!
Do Some Cycling on your Own First
I won’t sugarcoat this: spin is a difficult class and even seasoned veterans get in a real good, challenging workout. It’s fast paced and intense- in a good way! With that in mind, it’s not a bad idea to build up your cycling fitness a bit before you hop into a class.
Nothing crazy here, just take some time during your next few workouts at the gym to hop on a stationary bike and get the feeling down. Think about starting out with 10 or so minutes at a low to medium intensity depending on your fitness level and then increasing your time or intensity a little bit with each workout.
You’ll build up some leg strength as well as cardio fitness so that your first class won’t seem quite so intimidating.
Choose Your Instructor
As with any new class, it is a good idea to do a little research on your instructor before signing up for class. They will each differ in their coaching style, their music selection, and of course whether it is a beginner focused or more challenging class.
Also keep in mind, even after doing all your research, you still might choose an instructor that you just don’t vibe with. Don’t give up! Just give someone else a shot.
Dress for Success
Form fitting leggings or shorts are the best option for cycling class as you can avoid the potential hazard of getting any loose material stuck in the machinery.
And don’t forget a full water bottle and a sweat towel, you’ll make good use of both of them!
Get to Class Early
It’s important (and respectful to your instructor) to be on time for class at all times, but for the first class do your best to be early. Give yourself time to introduce yourself and let he or she know that you’re just beginning with spin class.
At this point you’ll want to choose your bike and have your instructor help you set it up for the first time. Proper bike setup is key for your comfort and success in class. You’ll want to adjust things like the seat height and position, the handlebar height, your footing and more.
Once you’ve got the bike set up just right, make a note of your settings so you can set yourself up the next class!
Take Class at Your Own Pace
One of the best parts of spin class is that you are in control of the difficulty of your workout. The instructor is there to guide you through which parts should be harder or easier, but ultimately controlling the resistance on your bike is totally up to you.
No need to worry about anyone else in the class judging you, as they are most likely too busy with their own workout. Stick with a pace that’s challenging but comfortable and remember you can always go harder or faster if necessary.
It’s OK to Take a Break
Follow along with the class as best you can, but if you find the rest intervals aren’t quite long enough to help you recover before your sprints, take them for a few more seconds!
Catch your breath and recover, or pass on the sprint interval entirely if you need to.
